A commonly stated limitation of AM screens is given by this formula:

  • maximum distinct densities = (dpi / lpi) squared

This leads to inaccurate colors and banding of gradients, as illustrated above. Consider a 150 lpi halftone screen printed at 1440X1440 dpi: with only 92 distinct levels of density available, banding of gradients will be severe.
